Teen Sexuality

My parents are not "religious."   They sent us to a Christian school when I was younger, only because it was the only private school in the county.  We never talked about religion, we never talked about a lot of things, especially, sex.  It was the forbidden topic, nobody talked about it.  At that time, there were some books written, but not much else.  Porn had not taken over the Internet, because the computers we had at the time were not all talking to each other via the Internet.  We are in a new era now.

Kids today are looking for information around sex at a much younger age than my peers did.  They have access to porn, so it seems their curiosity about sex begins earlier.  I can understand this.  But as most of us already know, porn is a very small aspect of sexuality.  It lacks intimacy, love, affection, closeness and how it looks for two people to connect deeply and profoundly.  So I had to ask myself, what do we as a society do about this?

In school kids learn about prevention of STD's and pregnancy .  I did some digging and found out that scare tactics are being used to persuade teens to abstain from sex. This approach is not working.  Teen pregnancy it at its highest and infection by STD's is at record highs. Merely telling kids to abstain is not be the best course of action.

What if there was a place where kids could come and ask real questions around sex and relationship.  Is there someone one available to safely and competently guide this exploration?  What if there were some positive skills that could be presented to teens to allow them to experience the closeness and bliss-hopelessly looked for in early sexual activity?  Could we teach that what we really want in relationship can be had without the physical dangers, the emotional entanglement, and the fruitless quest for satisfaction?  Is it possible that a teen could be taught that satisfaction is brought to the relationship, not extracted from it.*

This would probably be an ongoing class rather than a two hour didactic rant by health sciences teacher.  Would this fit in the schools?
